This project is being undertaken by a citizens’ committee of volunteers acting in the national public interest. All of the members are committed to the preservation and promotion of Canadian sporting history, and are prepared to devote the time and energy necessary to seeing the project through. The members come from a range of business and professional backgrounds, thus constituting a group capable of addressing the various anticipated aspects of this complex project.
The objectives of the project are fourfold:
- To commemorate the gift of a hockey championship trophy by Canada’s sixth governor general, Lord Stanley of Preston.
- To inform and entertain the people of this nation and visitors to Canada.
- To enhance the urban fabric of the nation’s capital through a permanent commemoration.
- To give expression to the shared pride of Canadians in this country’s gift of hockey to the sporting world.
